Description

The Former Mildmay Arms is a public house that dates back to the mid-19th century. It has since been converted into residential use. The building features Flemish bond red brick with stuccoed dressings, while the rear wing is constructed of flint with red brick dressings. It has slate roofs with pedimental gable ends and moulded eaves.

The structure is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay west front. The centre of the first floor projects forward and includes a small pediment with a painted clock face in the tympanum. Below this, there is a moulded stucco frieze beneath the projecting eaves and moulded stringcourses at the first-floor level. The first floor has narrow round-headed windows, with the centre window being paired. On the ground floor, there is a wide central bar window (with replaced glazing) flanked by doorways that feature linked elliptical arches with moulded imposts and panelled, glazed doors. The north side has a pair of round-headed first-floor windows, and the rear wing includes an elliptical oculus on the north side and round-headed windows in the gable end.

The interior has not been inspected. Notably, a 'Silent Clock' is located in the tympanum of the pediment on the front of the building. This clock is a remnant of the County Court Act of 1867, known as the Slate Act, which rendered debts chalked on a slate behind the bar irrecoverable, indicating that credit ceased at 11:50 PM on the date the Act became operative.
