Description
St John's Rooms and Chapel, built in 1833, is located on the north side of High Street. The chapel and the lower part of St John's Rooms date back to the 13th century and are constructed from flint and stone. The ground floor of St John's Rooms features a 13th-century lancet window and was originally the hall of the hospital. The first and upper floors were added in the 18th century, with a stone cornice above the first-floor window. The upper floor is finished in brick with stucco and stone dressings, topped by a hipped roof covered in old tiles. The ground floor includes a lancet window and an arched doorway. The chapel has six lancet windows, while the upper floors contain six sash windows with glazing bars; the first-floor sash windows have Gibbs surrounds. There is a cornice between the floors and a parapet with a very steep pitched roof. The original spaces within the building have been divided up, and there are two tablets by Eric Gill.
