Description
The Guildhall, located on the south side of High Street, was originally built between 1871 and 1875 by architects Jeffery and Skiller. This Gothic building is designed in the "Middle Pointed" style and features a tall central tower along with angle pavilions topped with French pavilion roofs, all covered in slate. The structure is made of yellow sandstone with red stone dressings and has a symmetrical frontage consisting of three central bays, which includes a porch and the tower, and two additional bays on either side. The porch has three bays supported by granite columns. The building stands three storeys high with paired windows and an archway on the right side, showcasing extensive carved decoration. The entire structure was cleaned and restored in 1971. At the west end, there is a lower extension built of flint, which is two storeys high and features pointed windows; this extension was added in 1892-1893 and designed by architect J B Colson.
