Description
Bishop's Gate is a Grade I listed gateway and porter's lodge, dating from around 1436. It is constructed from flint and stone and stands two storeys high. The gateway features a large two-centre moulded arch with shield spandrels and a smaller two-centre pedestrian arch to the right, flanked by end buttresses. Above the arches is a central niche for a statue, accompanied by single flanking lights with cusped round heads. The parapet is crenellated and has been remade. Both doors are adorned with intricate tracery. Inside, the structure is vaulted. To the west of the gate is a two-storey porter's lodge, which has two-light arched casements with flat heads and dripstones. Beneath it is a brick-built pointed barrel-vaulted undercroft with a stone doorway. The site is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
