Description
The Church of St Martin-at-Palace is a historic building that dates back to the 11th, 15th, and 16th centuries. It is constructed of flint with stone dressings and features a lead roof. The church has a two-stage tower and includes a nave and chancel, with north and south aisles that do not extend to the east wall. There is a south porch and an unbuttressed three-stage tower.
The west façade showcases a three-light perpendicular window, square sound holes with tracery, and two-light reticulated tracery belfry windows. The crenellated parapet is adorned with tracery panels and corner pinnacles. The nave has clerestory windows that are square with quatrefoil tracery, and there is a two-storeyed porch attached to the aisle, featuring a remade outer doorway and two windows above.
In addition, there are two three-light re-faced perpendicular windows in the nave and one identical window in the chancel aisle. The north aisle contains a two-light decorated west window and two 19th-century chancel windows. The east end of the aisles features two three-light perpendicular windows. The former unaisled chancel has long and short quoins, and the east window is a three-light perpendicular design with a pointed arch. The church is currently redundant and used as a store.
