Description

The gates, gatepiers, and forecourt walls, including the associated arch and bridge to the south, are located at the Almshouses and are listed as a Grade II building. The wall serves as a retaining wall for the raised forecourt and is made of rough-dressed, coursed limestone blocks. It retains its original sandstone copings and originally featured wrought iron railings, with the attachments still visible. The wall stands approximately 0.5 meters high at the northern end and rises to just over 2 meters at the southern end due to the sloping terrain.

In the center, there is a fine pair of panelled sandstone gatepiers, each about 1.8 meters tall, featuring moulded bases and cornices, topped with finial bases (the finials are missing). The original wrought iron half gates have a shaped top and scrolled ends, along with decorative lower railings. A contemporary flight of five sandstone steps leads up to the gates and piers.

At the northern end, the wall ends with a pair of plain 19th-century gatepiers and a wide modern iron gate. The southern end of the wall returns west to connect with the almshouse’s rubble garden wall. Here, there is a pointed-arched entrance within a short section of wall that continues eastward, featuring a 19th-century chamfered wooden frame. This section of the wall slopes down past the arch to form a low churchyard revetment wall. The arch leads to a simple, round-arched pedestrian bridge without parapets, which spans a stream flowing downhill from St Dyfnog's Well, constructed of limestone rubble.
