Description

The building is a house that was originally stables, located at number 5 on James Street, and includes adjoining sections of the Cathedral Close wall. It dates from the early 14th century and early 19th century, with 20th-century additions and alterations. The structure is made of coursed and squared stone with stone dressings and features pantile roofs, including a single coped ridge and gable stacks, along with pantile and concrete copings on the wall.

The house is two storeys high and has a door on the south side flanked by single 20th-century windows, all with round heads. To the left, there is a basket arched carriage opening with a 20th-century glazed screen and door. Further left, there is a lower single bay featuring an Early English style double lancet window. There are also single storey outbuildings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

To the south, there is a section of the wall approximately 75 meters long. To the east, bordering East Bight, there is another section of wall about 90 meters long, which includes a moulded elliptical carriage arch with a pair of doors at the west end and a rounded corner at the east end. Beyond this, bordering East Bight to the west, is a section of wall approximately 150 meters long. Although this section of the Close wall has been pierced and patched, it remains largely original.
