Description

The building is a stable block, now a house, with associated garden walls. It likely dates to the 17th century or earlier, with significant alterations made in the mid-18th century and again in the 19th and late 20th centuries. The main structure is of old red brick in lime mortar, laid in English bond, though the front facade has been refaced with yellow/salmon brickwork in Flemish bond, featuring a Portland stone impost band at the centre. The roof is hipped and covered in concrete pantiles.

The building is a long, one-and-a-half-story structure, with a two-story projecting central tower and slightly projecting flanking sections. These flanking sections have half-pediments that form lean-to roofs against the tower. There are nine wide, round-arched openings, with a floor cutting across the opening at impost level. Each opening has a symmetrical, 20th-century stained timber glazed door and sidelights. A dentilled brick eaves cornice runs along the side wings and the half-pediments of the central section.

The central tower features a 20th-century two-light casement window above the central arched opening. This opening has a block rusticated brick surround and a panelled hardwood entrance door with a sidelight. The tower also has a dentil eaves cornice, a pyramid roof, and a gilded wind vane.

Internally, the building has been extensively altered in the 20th century, but some original oak timber-framed partitions and heavy chamfered beams with heavy square joists remain at the rear.

The former stable was constructed as part of the service buildings for Ware Park. The pomarium (fruit garden) stands alongside the south wall of a large walled garden dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. The garden walls are approximately 3 meters high, predominantly of red brick in Flemish bond, with some yellow/grey stock bricks on the south side. Modern gateways have been incorporated into the south, west, and east sides of the wall.

The buildings are included in the list for their group value.
