Forecourt Wall To Pomarium

The forecourt wall to Pomarium is a stable yard screen wall that now serves as the forecourt wall to a house in a former stable block, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of yellow brick and features carved Portland stone finials on the piers, along with York stone coping on top of the wall. The wall stands 2.5 meters high and is 50 centimeters thick, with a stepped plinth. At the top, there is a three-course oversailing band. The central gateway is flanked by wide square piers that are taller than the wall itself, and there are two smaller arched gateways on either side of the wall. These smaller gateways have heavy block rustication in brick and a Portland stone step. The central piers include a projecting brick band that continues the top band of the wall, and they are topped with elaborate stonework that features a moulded base supporting a large carved stone pineapple. Heavy boarded doors are installed in the arched openings.
