Description

Bengeo Hall Stables, dating to the early to mid-18th century with 19th-century additions, are a red brick structure built in a Flemish bond pattern. The building has an old tiled, hipped roof with a pediment front and a brick modillioned eaves cornice. Welsh slate lean-to roofs are situated behind the lower half of the pediment gables, with a hipped roof around the rear range.

The stable block consists of a 3-bay central 2-storey front and single-storey 1-bay wings to the left and right. The exterior exhibits a Palladian style, featuring recessed full-height pilaster strips at the corners, with the front elevation slightly projecting. A central arch is present, with a projecting brick triple keyblock and brick plat band imposts creating a giant triumphal arch motif. The first floor incorporates squat 6-pane sash windows within red rubbed brick segmental arches that have flat extrados, with a recessed 4-panel loft door centrally placed and bearing a segmental head. The ground floor features 12-pane sash windows flanking a recessed 6-panel door, all within rubbed brick segmental arches with flat extrados. The slightly recessed wings on either side have one window each - a plain glazed sash to the left and a mullion and transom window with casements to the right. A projecting plinth runs across the building’s full width. A pediment gable sits centrally, adorned with brick modillion cornices, a lunette, and an infill of honeycomb brickwork containing voids for a dove loft. Half-pediments are present to the left and right, featuring corbelled band cornices. Two stable doors are situated in the rear range. The interior was not inspected.
