Description
Bengeo Old House, formerly known as St Leonard's Bengeo, is a former vicarage of St Leonard's Church, which is located to the north-west. This building dates from the late 16th century and has undergone alterations and extensions in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features a combination of timber framing and plastered, rendered brickwork, topped with old tiled multi-gabled roofs.
The south elevation presents an irregular seven-bay front and is one room deep. It has two storeys and attics, with the first floor showcasing seven sash windows, primarily with 12 panes. There is a gable above the window in the third bay from the right. The ground floor includes wood casement windows set beneath segmental arches, a 12-pane sash beneath a gable, and large early 19th-century French windows featuring moulded mullions and transoms with divided glazing, all beneath a broad segmental arch on the right.
The north elevation has projecting gables on the left and right, with the right gable extended in 1989. A central projecting gable, also brought forward in 1989, is positioned over a projecting ground floor porch. To the left, there is a recessed gable, and a low-pitched Welsh slated lean-to spans the front, filling the space between the projecting gables and the central porch. The fenestration is irregular, and there is a late 19th-century timber-framed porch with a brick base that is half-glazed, featuring leaded lights and glazed sidelights. The porch has a cambered embattled head with ornamental studding and pebbledash panels above, supported by moulded consoles and topped with an oversailing open gabled roof.
The roof includes one box casement dormer on the left side of the south face, a central red brick chimney with clustered square shafts, oversailing courses, and long orange clay pots, while other chimneys are rendered. The interior has not been inspected.
