Description
No. 8 Swan Lane is a shop building dating from the late 19th century, with 20th-century alterations to the shop front. It is constructed of brick with ceramic tile detailing and has a slate roof. The building is three stories tall and occupies a corner site, featuring four bays facing Bedford Street and five bays along Swan Lane.
On the first floor, the sash windows have semi-circular top sashes and ceramic tile jambs that extend into the string course. The rubbed brick arches above the windows each consist of three extended pointed voussoirs made of alternating red and grey bricks. The second floor also has sash windows, which are topped with rubbed brick semi-circular arches and raised surrounds.
A thin entwined shaft with a foliated capital is set into the corner of the building. The cornice features alternating red and blue brick corbelling along with ceramic tiles. Additionally, there are central and end rusticated pilasters with raised blue brick panels. The roof is hipped.
