Description

15 Bedford Street is a Grade II* listed former shop that has been converted into an office. The building dates back to the 16th century, with a 15th-century undercroft. The original shop was heightened in the 18th century. The rear ground floor wall is made of masonry, while the timber frame is rendered. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there is a brick rear block with an unseen roof. The street-facing section has two storeys and features a jettied first floor, which was raised to three storeys in the 18th century.

The façade consists of two bays, showcasing a 16th-century shopfront with a central door and moulded window and door jambs. Above this, there are 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars and moulded timber surrounds, along with side-hung casements with glazing bars on the second floor. A bracket cornice adorns the top of the building. Inside, the first floor boasts a moulded patterned ceiling and remnants of 16th-century windows on both the front and rear walls.

The undercroft, located beneath the rear range and at right angles to the street, is constructed of brick and features a pointed barrel-vault profile. It has single order diagonal ribs that spring from corbels, along with one cross-rib. The diagonal ribs were added later to support a side chamber in the east wall, and there is a blocked profile of an end chamber in the north wall due to the 18th-century stairs. The building is designated as Grade II* for its significant undercroft, which is part of an important group within the City walls, as well as for its 16th-century timberwork.
