Description

TG 2308 NW BEDFORD STREET (north side) 16/29 5.6.72. No. 15. GV. II Former shop, now office with C15 undercroft. Former shop:- C16, heightened in the C18. Masonry rear ground floor wall and rendered timber frame. Pantile roof. Brick rear block, roof not visible. Street range is 2 storeys, jettied at first floor. Heightened to 3 storeys in the C18. 2 bays. C16 shopfront with central door, moulded window and door jambs. C18 sash windows with glazing bars and moulded timber surrounds above and side-hung casements with glazing bars at 2nd floor. Bracket cornice. The first floor has a moulded patterned ceiling and evidence of C16 windows on the front and rear walls. Undercroft:- Brick. Beneath the rear range and at right-angles to the street line. Pointed barrel-vault profile with single order diagonal-ribs springing from corbels and one cross- rib. The diagonal ribs are later insertions to accommodate the side chamber in the east wall. Profile of an end chamber in the north wall, blocked by the C18 stairs. The building is graded II because of the undercroft, one of an important group within the City walls and also the C16 timberwork.
