Description
The Old Post Office Yard, located behind number 19 to the right of the carriage arch, is a former house now serving as a restaurant. It dates back to the 15th century and was partly rebuilt in the 20th century. The building is constructed of rendered flint rubble and features a pantile roof. It is positioned at right angles to and set back from the street line, consisting of two storeys plus an undercroft.
The façade includes one off-centre door flanked by reeded pilasters and a decorated frieze, along with end and central 20th-century doors. There is a panelled door at the extreme right with a simple reveal. The scissor-brace roof was rebuilt in the 20th century, featuring one heavy cambered tie at the south end with mortices for wall bracing.
The undercroft is notable for its brick ribs and webbing, divided into four bays with a central stone column that has a moulded base and capital. Each bay is adorned with double-order diagonal ribs and wall arches. There is a blocked entrance on the east side and lighting niches with moulded brick-on-edge heads. The undercroft is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
