Description
The Old Post Office, also known as Whitewalls Cottage and No 2 Whitewalls Cottage, is a row of cottages, likely originally four in number, now used as two separate houses. The walls are rendered cob with wooden lintels, and the roof is thatched with wheat reed. Brick chimneys are situated over the gable ends and over the party wall towards the right-hand side, with an outbuilt stack also on the right.
The original plan probably comprised three single-room cottages, extended in the later 18th century with a further single-room plan cottage, its front slightly set back. Some 20th-century remodelling of the plan is likely.
The front elevation is virtually unaltered and slightly irregular, with five window bays. Doorways are positioned towards the left and right of the centre, and an old doorway has been blocked on the right. A circa early 19th-century 16-pane sash window is located to the left of the middle doorway. Above, to the front of the right-hand cottage, is an old 18-pane three-light casement window and a wider 24-pane four-light casement. The remaining windows are probably 20th-century 12-pane two-light casements. The interior has not been inspected.
