Description
Manor Cottage, formerly part of The Old Manor House, dates to possibly the 17th century, but largely appears to be 18th century, with extensions added around the late 19th century. There have been some 19th and 20th century alterations. The building is constructed of coursed killas stone, killas rubble, some dressed stone and rendered areas, particularly to Manor Cottage. Various roof materials are used, including dry Delabole slate, an asbestos slate hipped roof on Manor Cottage, concrete tile on the main part of the Manor House, and corrugated asbestos over a front wing extension. Chimneys are built of rubble, with one brick chimney on the left-hand gable end.
The building has an irregular plan, consisting of a principal two-room range, possibly dating back to the 18th century or earlier, with a parlour wing in front of the left-hand room. A further two-room 18th century range is set at right angles on higher ground to the right, projecting at both the front and rear. A late 18th or early 19th century single-room service cottage is situated in front of the parlour wing, with later 20th century extensions to the rear of the right-hand side. Local folklore suggests a tunnel connects The Manor House to the nearby Miners Arms public house.
The front of the Manor House exhibits original 18th century flat arches above the ground-floor openings – a doorway on the left and a window on the right. A 20th century gable has been rebuilt above the right-hand window. 20th century windows are present throughout and a 20th century door is located on the rear elevation, which has two windows. A stepped lateral chimney is positioned towards the right. The cottage wing has a single window opening on the front, with an old four-panel door. Manor Cottage has a projecting regular two-window end, with circa late 19th or 20th century 12-pane horned sash windows. The right-hand side wall features a three-window entrance front with two doorways and similarly styled sash windows. The interior has not been inspected.
