Description

The Old Post Office and adjoining outbuildings are a house, originally divided into two dwellings and later used as a post office, with a connected outbuilding now used as a store. The main building dates to the late 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It is timber-framed, with roughcast rendering, a slate roof, and a central brick ridge stack. A further external rubble chimney with a rebuilt brick stack stands at the rear of the northernmost bay. The house has four framed bays aligned north/south, featuring a large central chimney. The external east front has two 3-light casement windows and one square window on the ground floor, and four 2-light casement windows on the first floor. A central entrance has a partly glazed door. A single-storey addition from the 20th century extends from the rear left side.

Inside, much of the original timber framing remains, apparently in three panels from sill to wall-plate. The roof has been raised, but collar and tie-beam trusses with three struts (the outer ones raking) survive. Some stop-chamfered main ceiling beams are present, with bar straps in the northernmost bay. A doorway with a Tudor-arched head is found in the third bay from the south end.

The adjoining outbuilding, positioned at the north end, is timber-framed, partly roughcast with weatherboarding and corrugated metal cladding, and has a slate roof. It is a single framed bay with two levels. The framing is visible at eaves level, consisting of one row of panelling. The east elevation has a square window, a door, and a loft opening above.
