Description
A house, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, and subsequently altered in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The house was originally a single property but is now divided into two dwellings. It is constructed of timber framing with brick, with some roughcast and stuccoed areas, and has a slate roof, hipped at the northwest corner of one wing, with a brick stack at the north end of the main ridge. The building has two storeys and a facade of one bay plus three bays. The windows all have moulded architraves, and the fenestration is irregular. The main three-bay part features two six-pane windows and a three-light casement window on the ground floor, and two two-light casement windows and a three-light casement window on the first floor. There are two doorways: the main entrance has a heavily moulded flat canopy supported by shaped brackets, and a four-panelled door, partially glazed; the other entrance has a half-glazed door dating from the 20th century. The single-bay part has a four-light casement window on the ground floor and a three-light casement window on the first floor. Some timber framing is visible at the rear, along with further 20th-century alterations and additions.
The interior of the main part of the building retains substantial ceiling beams and close-set studding, with a large lower corner brace visible. The house is situated between the Post Office and the Methodist Chapel in a prominent part of Broad Street and is included on the list for its group value and contribution to the streetscape.
