Description
No. 5 Bedford Street is a former warehouse that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 19th century, with 20th-century alterations, and features a late 15th-century undercroft. The building has a painted brick exterior, with the ground floor rendered. It stands on a corner site and consists of three storeys with five bays. The ground floor has a 20th-century facade that includes a central door and four semicircular arched windows. The central bay is recessed, featuring a casement window on the first floor and a loading door on the second floor. The outer bays have sash windows with glazing bars, with segmental arches on the first floor and flat arches on the second floor. There is a corbelled block cornice and a central pediment. The undercroft, located beneath the west side, dates from the late 15th century and is constructed of brick with flint side walls. It consists of two bays with single-order chamfered diagonal ribs and four side chambers, with those on the western side possibly reduced in depth. The undercroft is significant as it is part of an important group of medieval undercrofts within the city walls, which is why the building is listed as Grade II*.
