Description
No. 65 Pottergate is a former house now converted into flats, featuring a 15th-century undercroft. The main structure dates from the 17th century, with a partly rebuilt 20th-century gable and a rear outbuilding. The exterior is roughcast on flint rubble walls, with plaster quoins and a black pantile roof. The building has two storeys plus a cellar and consists of three bays. There is a central door with a simple timber surround, and sash windows throughout, which have flat arches and plaster surrounds. A box cornice is present, along with an off-centre dormer that has a sash window and a small sloping dormer to the left.
The undercroft is constructed of brick and has a T-shaped plan that is partly beneath the 17th-century building. It features single-order diagonal and cross ribs that spring from wall piers, along with wall arches and lighting niches. Original entrances can be seen in the southeast corner of the west range and in the north wall of the north/south range. There is also one groin-vaulted bay beneath the pavement. The building is designated as grade II* due to the significance of the undercroft, which is part of an important group within the City Walls.
