Description
No. 2 Charing Cross is a Grade II listed building that was formerly used for an unknown purpose and is now a shop and museum store. The building features a 15th-century undercroft. The shop and museum store has a rendered timber frame on the first and second floors, topped with a pantile roof. It is situated on a corner site and has three storeys, with a jetty at the first floor. The façade has six bays facing Charing Cross and two bays facing Maddermarket. The ground floor includes 20th-century picture windows, with loading doors located at the extreme right. The sash windows have glazing bars and simple moulded surrounds. The first-floor loading doors, located in the third bay from the right, also feature glazing bars, a simple moulded surround, and a flat hood. A plain box cornice runs along the top, and the roof is hipped. The undercroft is made of brick and consists of two bays with single order diagonal ribs. The west bay has hollow chamfered ribs and a circular side chamber that is away from the street, while the east wall is from the 20th century. The building is designated Grade II due to its significant undercroft, which is part of an important group within the City Walls.
