Description
22 and 24 Lower Goat Lane is a building that was originally used for an unknown purpose but is now occupied by shops. It dates back to the 17th century, with 18th and 19th century extensions at the rear. The exterior is finished in stucco and features a pantile roof. The building has two storeys, with the first floor jettied and two bays. The shopfronts were added in the late 19th and 20th centuries and include side entrances. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, and there is a bracket cornice along the top. Additionally, there are two gabled dormers.
The undercroft is made of brick and has a pointed barrel-vault that runs parallel to the street, ending at a 20th-century wall at the southern end. Inside the undercroft, there is one side chamber and one end chamber, along with a garderobe shaft in the west wall. Notably, a semi-circular brick stairwell in the north-west corner remains intact, making it one of only two such stairwells still existing in the City. The building is designated as grade II* due to the significance of the undercroft, which is part of an important group associated with the City Walls.
