Description

These shops, at numbers 18 and 20 Lower Goat Lane, date from 1820, as indicated by a datestone. They are constructed of red brick with a pantile roof and stand three storeys high, comprising four bays. Number 18 has a 20th-century shopfront featuring a fascia and recessed doors positioned slightly off-centre to the left and right. Number 20 also has a 20th-century shopfront with a recessed door, but retains a 19th-century fascia with elaborate lettering supported by consoles. A yard entrance is located at the extreme right-hand side. Sash windows with glazing bars are present throughout, each set beneath a rubbed brick flat arch. A fascia cornice runs above number 18, while number 20 has a simpler bracket cornice. The building includes extensive contemporary barrel-vaulted cellars.
