Description

The Friends Meeting House is a Quaker chapel built in 1826 by J.T. Patience, with a single-storey extension added to the south side in the 20th century. The building features white brick with stone detailing and red brick sides, topped with a slate roof. It is set back from the street and has two projecting wings. The chapel itself is a single storey with a balcony and consists of three bays, with the central bay projecting forward. It has central double doors framed by an unfluted Doric tetrastyle portico, which is accessed by five steps. The entablature of the portico extends across the outer bays as a stringcourse, supported by four pilasters. The chapel has large sash windows with radial glazing bars in the top sash and semi-circular arches, with a double-order window in the centre bay. A heavy cornice crowns the structure. The projecting wings are low and two storeys high, each with three bays featuring sash windows and a door in the corner. There is a single bay facing the street, each with a blind recessed panel topped by a semi-circular arch. The property is enclosed by cast iron railings and stone gate posts, which have a simple over-thrown design and a central lantern.
