Description

No. 20 Market Place is a house and shop, now entirely a shop, that is connected to No. 21. It has origins dating back to the 17th century but was re-fronted in the mid-19th century and altered in the late 20th century. The building is made of red brick, which has been rendered and colourwashed, and features a pantiled roof. It stands three storeys high with a three-window range. The mid-20th century plate-glass shop front is topped by a prominent fascia board. There are three 2/2 horned sash windows on the first and second floors, with the upper windows being smaller. The eaves cornice has mutule brackets, and the roof is gabled with internal stacks at both the north and south ends.

At the rear, there is a hipped warehouse range that is two storeys tall with a dormer attic. This section has two 4/4 horned sash windows on the first floor and a blocked window facing west, along with a gabled dormer.

Inside, the ground floor has a character from the 20th century and has been opened up into a unified sales floor that connects with No. 21. The two cellar ranges run parallel to the street. The front range features 17th-century brickwork, sunk-quadrant moulded bridging beams, and two blocked shutes leading to the street. The rear cellar also has 17th-century brick, with re-used 16th-century roll-moulded and crenellated bridging beams, and the north and south walls are clad in 17th-century small-framed panelling.
