Description
22 and 22A Market Place is a shop with domestic accommodation above, dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick and features a stuccoed facade, topped with machine-tile roofs. It stands three storeys high with a dormer attic and has a four-window range. The ground-floor shop front was updated in the late 20th century. The first floor is illuminated by three 2/2 horned sash windows and one 2/2 tripartite sash window. A moulded platband is present at the second floor, which also has four 2/2 horned sash windows. The gabled roof includes two gabled dormers, with the gables designed as pediments. There is an internal gable-end stack on the south side. To the right, the house is built over Row 38, which features chamfered bridging beams of 17th-century origin. A full-height cross-wing extends west along Row 38, covered by a hipped machine-tile roof, with two 20th-century casements visible. The interior of the shop was empty at the time of the survey, and no access was possible; however, the ground floor appears to be entirely of late 20th-century character.
