Description
No. 28 Market Place is a shop with domestic accommodation above, originating in the late 16th century but extensively rebuilt around 1840, making it primarily representative of that date. The building is constructed of red brick and has a roof covered with machine tiles. It stands four storeys tall and features a two-window range. The ground floor has a 20th-century glazed shop front beneath a cornice that includes mutules on the soffit. The first floor has two 6/3 sash windows without horns, set in recesses, and features gauged skewback arches. Each floor above has two similar sash windows with 6/6 glazing bars. The building is topped with a modillion eaves cornice and has a gabled roof. The north gable and parapet were rebuilt in the late 20th century, and there is an internal gable-end stack to the north. To the left, the building extends over Row 46. The south return wall displays false timbering but retains a chamfered brick arch from the 16th century. Inside, the ground and first floors lack notable features, while the upper floors are accessed by a stick-baluster staircase.
