Description
Nos. 34 and 35 Market Place is a pair of shops with accommodation above, built in the mid-19th century on the site of 15th-century predecessors, remnants of which can still be seen in the cellar of No. 34. The building is constructed of red brick and has a slate roof.
The exterior features three storeys and a two-window range. The right side (No. 34) has a late 20th-century shop front, while the left side (No. 35) has a late 20th-century bank facade. On the first floor, there are two bow windows, each with three unhorned sashes that do not have glazing bars, separated by cast-iron columns with modified Corinthian capitals and acanthus base decoration. The bows are topped with a dentil cornice and have flat roofs. The second floor is lit by two triple round-headed lancets, with the central ones being taller and wider than the flanking ones. Between these lancets are marble columns that also terminate in modified Corinthian capitals. The building has a coved timber eaves cornice and a gabled roof with a rebuilt central ridge stack. At the rear of No. 34, there is a wing that extends west along Row 51, featuring two 19th-century stained glass windows that are boarded on the interior.
Inside No. 34, the cellar contains a complete 15th-century double-chamfered depressed arch in brick with a plain hood mould, along with the remains of a second similar arch further east. There are tarred retaining walls, likely from the 16th century, on the north and south sides. However, there is little else of interest within. No. 35's interior has no visible items of interest, and its cellar was filled in during the late 20th century. Attached to the rear of No. 34 is a three-storey warehouse block, which is not included in this listing.
