Description
Nos. 13 and 14 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from around 1750 and was re-fronted in 1903. The building was converted to a shop in the 20th century, with the current shop front added in the 1960s. A rear range was added in 1976, and there have been internal alterations. The original house was one room deep with a cross-wing extending west from the south end. It is constructed of rendered and colourwashed red brick.
The exterior features three storeys and a four-window range. It has plate-glass display windows with a central door and a prominent fascia board. The first floor has two late 20th-century 12/12 sash windows and a late 20th-century canted bay fitted with 6/6 and 9/9 sashes, replacing a 19th-century bay. The second floor has four 8/8 late 20th-century sash windows, all with stucco surrounds. The building has a parapet and a hipped roof, likely covered with slate.
Inside, the ground floor is an open display area. The north room on the first floor features Adamesque plaster decoration from 1903. The south room opens off the former staircase landing through a doorway with an eared surround under a broken pediment. A similar doorway leads into the rear room in the former cross-wing. The front room has an acanthus and modillion plaster cornice. The mid-18th-century staircase remains from the first to the second floor, featuring an open string, three turned balusters on gadrooned vases per tread, and a moulded ramped handrail on turned newels. The stairwell has an egg-and-dart cornice, and the roof consists of two tiers of taper-tenoned butt purlins and collars.
