Description

Hardys is a public house located in Great Yarmouth, originally built in the late 18th century. The building has been extensively rebuilt and truncated in the 20th century due to bomb damage. It features a red brick exterior with burnt headers and a machine-tiled roof. The north-facing facade is three stories high and has a three-window range. The modern public house facade includes three pairs of Roman Doric columns that frame windows with both perpendicular and arched glazing bars, with doorways on either side. The first floor has three 9/9 horned segmental sash windows under gauged arches, and there is a gault brick platband at the second floor. The first floor also has three 6/8 sash windows, and the eaves cornice is adorned with paired modillions. The roof is gabled and hipped to the west, with a stack on the front slope. The east and west return walls were rebuilt in the 20th century, with the east featuring a shaped gable. The west return includes a 20th-century bow window on the ground floor, a Venetian window on the first floor, and a 6/6 sash on the second floor. Inside, the main bar has a moulded fire surround, while the west bar displays a frieze of late 20th-century paintings that depict scenes from the life of Lord Nelson, who is said to have addressed the public from this location on 6 November 1800 after receiving the freedom of the borough.
