Description
Sewell House is a house that has been converted into a restaurant, likely originating in the early 17th century when it was built as part of No. 27. The building features rendered and whitewashed brick with re-used timber elements and has a pantiled roof. It stands two storeys high with a dormer attic and a single window range. The facade was extended in 1932 by A.W. Ecclestone, using materials salvaged by Harry Johnson. The ground floor has a 4-light mullioned cross casement window that was salvaged from a house in Row 51, while the first floor has a 3-light casement window and the attic features a 2-light window. There is a small dormer behind the gable, also added in 1932, and the roof is gabled.
Inside, there is a 20th-century winder staircase, and the roof consists of principal rafters with one tier of taper-tenoned butt purlins. Historically, this house is notable as the birthplace of Anna Sewell (1820-1878), where she wrote her famous book, Black Beauty.
