Description
Nos. 7 and 8 Market Place is a shop with residential accommodation above, dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick and topped with a slate roof. It stands four storeys high and features a two-window range. No. 8 has an early 20th-century plate-glass shop front, while No. 7 includes a transomed window that is associated with the nearby Two Necked Swan Public House. The first floor was originally lit by two canted bay windows; the left-hand bay remains intact with an 8/8 unhorned sash and margin glazing, while the right-hand bay has been replaced with a 20th-century tripartite sash. Each of the upper floors contains two tripartite sashes, with No. 8 featuring early 19th-century 8/8 unhorned sashes and No. 7 having late 20th-century replacements. The windows have segmental heads. The hipped roof includes a central transverse stack. On the south side, there is a two-light early 20th-century display window with arched glazing bars. Inside, the ground floor and cellar have a character from the 20th century, while the first-floor east room boasts an early 19th-century interlace plaster cornice and a palmette frieze.
