Description

Nos. 86 and 88 Corn Street is a house that has been converted into two shops and a dwelling. It dates from the early 18th century and is built of coursed limestone rubble, with the right gable covered in 20th-century brick. The building features a gabled stone slate roof and a brick ridge stack. It has a three-unit outshut plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a five-window range.

The entrance includes an early 19th-century six-panelled door with a bracketed flat hood, while to the left there is a 20th-century shop window and a timber lintel over a 20th-century door. The first floor has late 19th-century two-light casements with timber lintels, and there is a small roof dormer. On the right side, there is a bay with two gabled half dormers that contain late 19th-century casements above a blocked carriageway opening, which has a 20th-century door and shop window.

At the rear, there is an 18th-century outshut and a 20th-century extension. Inside, the central room features a stop-chamfered bressumer above an open fireplace. The first floor includes stop-chamfered beams and a 16th-century chamfered pointed-arched fireplace. The roof has a collar-truss structure with butt purlins. The building is included for its group value.
