Description
Nos. 9 and 11 Market Hill is a shop with offices that dates from the 16th century, with 17th century additions, a 19th century refronting, and 20th century refurbishment. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring peg and clay tiled roofs and a red brick stack. It has a rectangular plan with a street range and two short conjoined rear wings, standing two storeys high with a cellar.
The front east elevation has a two-window range and a hipped roof, with a stack located behind the ridge at the south end. The ashlar lining is notable, and the first floor windows have moulded architraves with sashes that include glazing bars and 4x4 panes. The ground floor features a 19th century double fronted shop with a central doorway, which has been altered to a 20th century style. The north end has a canted round 19th century doorway leading to No. 11, with a six-panel door. There are cellar grilles in the pavement south of the shop doorway.
The rear west elevation showcases twin gabled rear wings, with the southern wing rendered and featuring a half hipped roof. On the ground floor, there are two plain 20th century doors and one 19th century door, along with a sliding sash window with a moulded architrave containing 4x3 panes, and a 20th century casement window with 2x3 panes. Additionally, there are 20th century French windows with a total of 4x5 panes. The first floor has two sash windows, each with 3x4 panes, one for each unit.
Inside, some timber framing is exposed, with the first floor wall-plate displaying diamond mortices from a double 3-light window at the rear of the street range, which is now enclosed. There is also a later 17th century stack featuring back-to-back timber lintelled fireplaces on the ground floor.
