Description
No. 19 High Street is a house and shop that dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a probable extension at the rear from the early or mid-19th century, and a late 20th-century addition also at the rear. The building is constructed of brick, featuring painted Flemish bond at the front and exposed English bond at the rear, while the 19th-century addition is rendered. The roofs are slated, except for the 20th-century addition, which has a flat roof. The building has a single-depth plan with an added rear range on the right-hand side, likely overlapping with No. 18. A gallery connects the rear range to a back block, which is now part of No. 20, extending to the churchyard.
The structure has three storeys and a two-window range. The ground storey features a 20th-century shop front that rises to the cills of the second-storey windows. The upper-storey windows have flat gauged arches and recessed box-frames, with 20th-century wood casements in the second storey and late 19th-century sashes, each with one vertical glazing bar, in the third storey. There is a dentilled eaves cornice. At the rear of the 19th-century addition, there is an old 8-paned sash window, and a 4-paned wood casement in the gallery.
Inside, the ground and first floors have been wholly altered, although there is a good 19th-century marble chimneypiece in a first-floor room that originally formed the rear part of No. 18. The second floor and roof structure of No. 19 were not inspected. The layout of this building, including the back block, offers an interesting and unusual example of the evolution of an urban site.
