Description
No. 40 Southgate Street is a shop and former dwelling, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of brick with stone details and has a slate roof. The building is single-depth and adjoins the rear of No. 38 Southgate Street.
The exterior features four storeys and a cellar. The front has a 20th-century shop front framed by 19th-century pilasters and brackets at the ends of the shop fascia, topped with a low, stone-coped parapet. The first and second floors each have a large sash window, while the third floor has a shorter sash window. All windows have glazing bars arranged in a 4x4 pane configuration and are set in openings with flat arched heads made of seven raised and stepped voussoirs, along with projecting stone sills. The interior has not been inspected.
