Description
No. 28 Southgate Street, which also includes No. 2 Longsmith Street, is a shop and former dwelling dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone details and has a slate roof. It is a double-depth block with a rear wing facing Longsmith Street.
The exterior features four storeys and a cellar. The front has a late 19th-century shop front with a recessed, canted entrance and a quadrant return at the corner with Longsmith Street. The shop windows have full-height glass panels framed by cast-iron colonnettes and shallow segmental arches, with a shop fascia that includes a cornice and a cast-iron column supporting the corner of the building.
On the upper floors, the front facing Southgate Street has two bays with a moulded stone crowning cornice and blocking course. The first and second floors have sash windows with glazing bars arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration, while the third floor features shorter sashes with glazing bars arranged in a 3x3 pane configuration. All windows are set in openings with flat arched heads made of five raised-and-stepped voussoirs and have projecting stone sills.
The Longsmith Street side has three unequally spaced bays with sashes of various sizes on the upper floors, all with glazing bars. At the left-hand end of the wing, there is a doorway with a fanlight featuring vertical glazing bars and a four-panel door, with all openings having flat arched heads of five raised-and-stepped voussoirs.
Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters located at the rear right. The principal rooms on the first and second floors have splayed window reveals with panelled shutters and fielded eight-panel doors. The cellar has been relined throughout.
