Description

No. 19 Buttgarden Street is a house with a shop, likely built between the late 17th century and mid 18th century, and remodeled in the mid 19th century. It has a solid rendered front and a slate roof that has a steep slope at the rear, indicating that the front wall may have been raised. There are no visible chimneys from the street. The building is two storeys high and has a broad front with a three-window range.

The ground storey features horizontal channelling, topped with a broad bandcourse. The doorway is set in a single-storeyed surround located between this building and No. 18. It has a six-panelled door with a plain fanlight, flanked by chamfered and stopped pilasters. The frieze above the door has three small flat balls, and the fanlight has a shaped surround with a parapet that includes quatrefoil panels.

To the right is a shop front with pilasters that match those of the doorway, but with horizontal channelling on the shafts and enriched capitals. Above each pilaster is a shaped bracket supporting a round-headed panelled block, which forms the ends of a frieze now covered by a later fascia. The shop features two display windows that are canted toward recessed double doors; these windows have three lights with moulded upright glazing bars and shaped heads. The doors have glazed upper panels with rounded heads and solid moulded lower panels.

To the left, there is a single sash window with horns and margin-panes. The second storey has a canted bay window with a prominent top cornice on the left and two single-light windows on the right; all windows have sashes with horns, and all but the side-lights of the bays include margin-panes. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
