Description
This building consists of a pair of terraced houses and shops that have been combined into one structure. It is situated on an island site bordered by Buttgarden Street to the east and Honestone Street to the south, with the rest of this side of Market Place having been demolished. The building dates from the early to mid-19th century and features solid rendered walls and a hipped slate roof. It has three storeys, a basement, and a garret.
No 1 has a two-window range, while No 2 has a single window. The shop front of No 1, likely from the late 19th century with some 20th-century alterations, includes two display windows, with a panelled pilaster at the left supporting an entablature. No 2 has a similar single display window, which may also have an entablature concealed by a late 20th-century fascia, with a surviving console at the right end.
The upper-storey windows feature moulded architraves. The second-storey windows of No 1 are French windows with glazing bars and margin panes, while No 2 has six-paned sashes in this position. All third-storey windows have two-paned sashes. The rear wall, facing Honestone Street, has openings with plain raised surrounds; most have slightly pointed-headed lintels that project at either end, except for a round-arched stair window at No 1, which is tall and features 39 oblong panes with radial bars at the top. Below this window is a doorway with panelled reveals, and the left side has later boarding at the bottom. The second storey has two windows with six-paned sashes, and one in the ground storey likely has the same, although its lower sash is boarded over. The left side wall has openings that match those at the rear, and there is a pilaster strip at the right end, with no openings in the right side wall.
The interior has not been inspected, but No 1 appears to retain its original staircase, which features thin square balusters and a continuous handrail.
