Description
Red Lion Cottage is a house dating from the early to mid 16th century, with extensions from the 17th century, mid 18th century, and around 1970. It features a timber frame that is cased in red brick, with some areas rendered and some sham timber framing applied. The later additions are made of brick, and the roof is tiled. Originally, the cottage had a 2 bay open hall. The gable end facing the road has leaded light horizontal sliding sashes, with rendered areas above the ground floor brick that mimic framing. The original front of the cottage is now on the right side, facing the garden, and includes 2 light casements and horizontal sliding sashes with cambered and flat arched heads in the earlier section. The 17th century bay has a slightly higher ridge and features an extruded stack. To the right is the 1970 addition, which is made of similar brick. At the rear or left side is an external stack marked 'IG 1740', with offsets. The entrance is located in a 20th century lean-to addition behind the stack. Behind this and at the rear of the 17th century bay is a mid 18th century kitchen wing dated 'TS 1752', which has a rear gable end stack. Inside, the ground floor features a chamfered bearer, jowled posts with curved braces supporting cambered tie beams, queen struts clasping purlins, and curved windbraces. The 17th century bay has smaller scantling, straight braces, and a clasped purlin roof.
