Description
Fir Tree Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century that was restored and extended in the late 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick infill set on a rubble base and has a slate roof. The building consists of two framed bays aligned east to west, with an external rubble chimney at the east gable end, which has tiled offsets and a detached brick stack.
The cottage is two storeys high, with its framing consisting of four rows of panels from the sill to the wall-plate, and short straight braces across the lower corners of the first floor level. At the east end, there is a collar and tie-beam truss with four struts beneath the collar and a V-strut in the apex. The west end features a tie-beam truss with latticed struts. All windows are 20th-century casements.
On the north front elevation, there are two-light and three-light windows on both floors, along with a plank weathering at the level of the girding beam. To the east bay, there is a large two-bay, two-storey 20th-century wing that includes a lean-to outshut with a catslide roof in the west angle. The main entrance is currently located on the west side of this outshut. Additionally, there is a rubble lean-to addition at the west end of the main range.
