Description
This is a 19th-century public pump situated on a bank beside the road, directly in front of number 10, Holt Lodge, on Graveley Oak Lane. The pump is constructed of cast iron and features a raised ring to the shaft. It bears an oval maker’s plate, the upper part of which is no longer decipherable, along with a maker’s mark reading 'APPLEBY & Co. RENISHAW IRON WORKS/INVENTORS & MANUFACTURERS/OF PUMPS WITH REGISTERED/BUCKETS & CONE VALVES. No 4017'. The pump has a moulded corbel stage leading to a wider cylindrical barrel with fluted detailing and a domed cap on a wide, lettered flange. A large spurred spout with palmette decoration is on the south side, connecting to the barrel. An iron bracket, located on the east side near the head of the barrel, supports a pivot and a long, curved iron handle, although the seating of the pivot is broken. The pump is of both social and technological interest.
