Description
The Waggon and Horses Public House is a group of three adjoining houses, now functioning as a house, a store, and a public house. The buildings date from the 18th century or earlier, with the middle house being divided and the southern house (No. 21) constructed in the early 19th century. The public house in the northern house expanded into the middle house in the late 20th century.
The northern part features a timber frame that is roughcast, while the front of the middle house is stuccoed and lined to resemble ashlar, and the southern house is made of painted brick. Each house has steep old red tile roofs at different levels, with a catslide roof extending over the rear outshut of the northern house.
The northern part has three 2-light casement windows on the first floor, with the middle window being narrower and positioned above altered double doors. It is flanked by 3-light casement windows that have external shutters. There are external gable chimneys made of red brick at each end, with the southern gable chimney suggesting it predates the middle house. The middle house has five irregularly spaced windows on the first floor that correspond to windows on the ground floor. There is a plank door with a drip board to the south of the middle house, and a 2-light window replaces a former door to the left of the right-hand window. The flush 2-light casements have small panes.
The northern internal gable chimney is roughcast, and there is an internal chimney in the southern part. The southern house is narrow and lighter, featuring an internal southern gable chimney, a recessed sash window with 6/6 panes on each floor, and a gabled brick porch on the right-hand side. At the rear, there is a continuous lean-to outshut with painted brick walls and a black painted pantile roof. No. 21 is included for group value.
