Description
This is an 18th-century milestone located on the east side of Graveley High Street, opposite number 9, known as Mushroom Cottage. It was erected for the Stevenage-Biggleswade Turnpike Trust, which was founded in 1720. The milestone is made of white freestone, likely Portland Stone, and measures about 15 inches square, standing approximately 27 inches above the ground. The top of the stone is shaped like a blunt pyramid. The north face features a deeply cut inscription in 18th-century lettering that reads "33/MILES/from/LONDON." The south face has a similar inscription, though it is much weathered, indicating that the stone may have been reversed when the inscription needed to be recut.
