Description

The George and Dragon Public House is a building that was originally a house, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It features a brick front added in the mid-18th century and is likely to have been used as a coaching inn due to its location on the Great North Road. The structure has a timber frame that is roughcast over a tarred brick sill, with dark weatherboarding on the south side of the rear wing. The front is made of plum brick, patterned with blue headers and lighter red dressings, and has flat rubbed brick arches on both floors. The roof is steep and covered in old red tiles, with a rear catslide over an outshut.

This two-storey building with a cellar faces east and includes a rear outshut that is integral to the structure, along with a two-storey gabled rear wing at a lower level to the northwest. The symmetrical front features three windows on the first floor, set within a brick band at the eaves level, below a brick parapet and above a low plinth. The windows are slightly recessed box sash types with moulded trim and flat arches on each floor. There is a columned porch that leads up two steps, topped with a triangular pediment, and it contains fielded six-panel doors positioned between the columns. An elaborate scrolled wrought iron bracket and signboard are also present. Additionally, there is a stair turret with a swept roof located at the angle with the rear wing. An old photograph indicates that the front facade originally had three storeys.
