Description

Fontenoy Cottage, also known as No. 16, and No. 14, located on The Shambles in Bushey, is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the mid to late 17th century and was cased and extended in the late 18th or early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building has a timber frame with brick casing, rendered surfaces, some weatherboarding, and tile hanging, topped by a tiled roof.

The structure is arranged in an L shape, with two storeys and an attic. No. 14, on the left, features two windows and an entrance on the left side within a later porch. It has two-light casements with timber sills, a plat band, and one gabled dormer. The left gable end is weatherboarded, and there is a tall stack at the rear.

No. 16 has its entrance on the left in a later timber porch, leading to a two-light casement. A cross wing on the right projects forward and has two ground floor two-light casements with segmental heads and deep reveals. The first floor features a three-light flush frame casement, and the gable is tile-hung. This cross wing consists of two builds with a lower ridge at the rear, and there is a stack at the rear as well. The right return and rear are weatherboarded, and there is a small gabled weatherboarded wing at the rear.

Inside No. 14, there is a stop-chamfered binding beam and a clasped purlin roof. There is a flat-roofed roughcast addition that is not of special interest.
