Description
This is a house, originally built in the late 15th or early 16th century. It was subsequently floored in stages during the late 16th and 17th centuries. The front was re-faced in the late 18th or early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th century. The building is timber-framed and has a red brick front, though No. 6 is whitewashed. It features a steeply pitched roof covered in machine tiles and comprises a 2-bay hall with a service bay to the left. First-floor chambers were inserted at the ends, with the centre being floored later.
No. 4 has two windows and a central entrance, while No. 6 has one window to the right of its entrance. Both have early 19th-century doorcases with bracketed hoods; No. 4’s features reeded lintels and jambs. The ground floor has 19th-century sash windows in flush frames with moulded architraves and gauged brick flat arched heads. A plat band runs along the front. There are three 19th-century gabled dormers with bargeboards, along with dentilled brick eaves. An inserted cross-axial brick ridge stack sits over the entrance to No. 4, while a left-end external stack and a right-end stack on the front pitch are also present.
To the rear, there are casements in stock brick, alongside lean-to additions.
Inside, the roof is a lower king strut roof with curved queen struts, collars clasping the purlins, and hollow chamfered and curved supporting braces and wind braces.
Historical references are documented in Pevsner (1977) and G.Bailey and G.Longman’s Bushey: Then and Now (vol. 6, 1971).
