Description
The Police Station, built between 1883 and 1884 for the Metropolitan Police, is a three-storey building made of red brick with terracotta and sandstone detailing. It features a slate hipped roof and is designed with five bays, two of which are slightly set back on the right side. The entrance is located to the right and has banded rustication on the jambs, a round arched head, and recessed spandrels beneath a bracketed moulded pediment. The frieze above the entrance is inscribed with 'Metropolitan Police'.
The building has a plinth, a string course below the ground floor windows, and upper string courses along with sandstone courses. The windows are glazing bar sashes set in keyed moulded and gauged brick surrounds with slightly cambered heads, and the first and second floor windows have aprons. A coved cornice runs along the top of the building. There are three large stacks with projecting strips on the shafts and oversailing caps.
The left return of the building has two bays with windows in plain reveals and gauged brick heads. There is a pediment over a stone surround at the entrance towards the rear, and an extruded stack with offsets. The right return features one bay leading to a two-storey lean-to that extends to the rear with a coved cornice and a stack at the back. Originally, the building included an office, an occasional court, three cells, and two married quarters. Forecourt railings are attached to the front, along with a pier and a police lamp at the entrance.
