Description
The Magistrates Courts building, originally a police station, was constructed in 1850 and has since been altered. It features a combination of sandstone ashlar and rock-faced sandstone on the sides, with a roof that is likely slate but is concealed. The building has a large rectangular plan and includes various 20th-century additions at the rear.
It stands two storeys tall with six bays, arranged symmetrically. The second and fifth bays project slightly forward and are topped with shallow pediments. The structure has a plinth, string course, moulded cornice, and blocking course. The second bay features a doorway, while the fifth bay has been altered to include a window; both have doorcases adorned with heavy banded columns and pilasters, along with entablatures that have prominent cornices. The frieze above the doorway in the second bay is inscribed with the word "MAGISTRATES".
On the ground floor, there are round-headed sash windows with radiating glazing bars, while the first floor has tall 12-pane sashes with moulded architraves. The building includes a stone chimney on the left and brick chimneys in the center and on the right. The long left return wall has several notable features, including a blocked former doorway near the front with a lintel inscribed "CONSTABLE", a cast-iron standard measure built into the wall nearby, and three round-headed windows on the first floor.
