Description
No. 15 and No. 17 Derby Street, known as The Railway, is a shop and public house built in the mid to late 19th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of white-painted brick and features a slate roof. It has an irregular plan with the main range parallel to the street and back extensions. The structure is two storeys high and has a total of four windows on the front.
No. 15, which is the shop on the left, includes a three-light shop window with arched lights and a doorway to the right, both of which are pilastered and connected by a fascia board that has an awning box above the window. There is another doorway further to the right with a deeply-recessed door. On the first floor, there are two windows with raised sills and wedge lintels; one is a 16-pane sash window, while the other has altered glazing.
No. 17, which is The Railway, is symmetrical in design and features a central doorway with a pedimented surround. It is flanked by large rectangular windows that have altered glazing. Above, there is a large painted signboard at the first floor, also flanked by 12-pane sash windows. The building has gable chimneys and one ridge chimney.
This property forms a group with No. 36 opposite and the railway bridge to the right.
